International Students

Overview

International students who come to Canada are not covered under a government health plan.

Canadian students studying abroad will not be covered adequately under their government health plan.

An international student medical policy will provide emergency medical coverage for both types of students for a few dollars a day.

Eligibilty and Rates

INBOUND STUDENTS
(students studying in Canada)

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Applicant is 69 years of age and under at the time of application date of the policy.
  2. Applicant must be a student enrolled in a school within Canada, or
  3. Applicant must be an accompanying family member of the student residing in Canada.
  4. Applicant must not be insured under a provincial or territorial government health care plan. If the applicant becomes eligible for and insured under the government health care plan of the province or territory in which they study, the insurance will then apply in excess of this provincial or territorial government health care plan.
     
  5. Applicant must not be travelling against a physician's advice and have not been diagnosed with a terminal condition.

  • Minimum - 10 days
  • Maximum - 365 days ( or 366 days for leap years)

Minimum of 2 applicants required to be eligible for Family plan.



OUTBOUND STUDENTS
(students studying outside of Canada)

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Applicant must be 40 years and under at the time of application date of the policy.
  2. Applicant must be a student enrolled in a school outside of Canada, or
  3. Applicant must be an accompanying family member of the student studying abroad.
  4. Applicant must be insured or eligible for benefits under the government health care plan of the province or territory in which they reside. If the applicant is not insured under the government health care plan in the province or territory in which they reside, the portion that would have been refunded by the provincial or territorial government health care plan is not a benefit of this insurance.
  5. Applicant must not be travelling against a physician's advice and have not been diagnosed with a terminal condition.

Air Flight/Common Carrier Accident
Increase maximum sum insured - $100,000
24-Hour Accident
Increase maximum sum insured $25,000

$20 per person

Important: Optional coverage must be purchased prior to the effective date of the policy.

DEFINITIONS

FAMILY PLAN

Inbound Students
"Family" means a student aged 59 years and under plus their legal or common-law spouse, parent(s), step-parent(s), legal guardian(s), brother(s), sister(s), step-brother(s), step-sister(s) and unmarried dependent children of the student 25 years of age and under and who are living with the student while in Canada.



Outbound Students

"Family" means a student aged 40 years and under plus their legal or common-law spouse, parent(s), step-parent(s), legal guardian(s), brother(s), sister(s), step-brother(s), step-sister(s) and unmarried dependent children 25 year of age and under and who are living with the student while in country of study.

Note: "Family" also includes faculty, participants in educational/business/cultural exchanges and their family.

PRE-EXISTING CONDITION COVERAGE
Pre-existing conditions are covered providing they have remained stable in the 90 days prior to the effective date. This applies to both Inbound and Outbound Students.
