TRAVEL INSURANCE CANADA

Most travel insurance policies now have a limit of $5,000,000.00 for medical coverage. You must have underlying government health insurance in place to be properly covered under travel medical insurance. Travel medical insurance is meant to cover emergencies, so if it is not an emergency there is no coverage. An emergency could be defined as: a sudden unforeseen sickness or injury which requires immediate treatment by a physician or dentist and cannot be reasonably delayed.

Travel medical policies will cover emergency treatment for pre-existing conditions. There will be a specified stability period such as 90 days (high blood pressure) or 365 days (heart condition – age 75 or more) that must be met. The length of the stability period will vary from 90 days to 365 days depending on the condition and person’s age. A stability period is measured by "going back" the specified amount of days before the policy start date.
